Base Gods secure another Seattle Kickball Championship!

After a grueling Red Rubber Showdown, the Base Gods of Seattle reclaimed another Underdog Sports League championship. It was a peaceful victory for the Gods after a streak of uncharacteristic losses this summer. One being particularly taxing on the team’s psyche. The God’s resilience and determination paid off in the end, as they managed to come out on top with their 15th league championship title.

Earlier this summer, the legendary Violent Chubbies achieved a historic win against the Gods. Handing them their first League Championship loss since 2017! With that victory, they entered the Late Summer semifinals confidently where they faced veterans Hold My Kick. In an intense match that lasted 7 innings, the Violent Chubbies ultimately fell 11-12 in a heart-breaking finish with runners in scoring position.

The Base Gods and Hold My Kick would face off in the League finals. This was a rematch of their 11-11 season opener. In their second meeting the Gods had narrowly won 8-7. This time around the Base Gods took an early lead and never looked back! Eventually winning the championship game by a score of 18-4. It was an impressive victory for the Base Gods! Earning the title of “The greatest show on dirt”.

Looking ahead the Base Gods are gearing up for the 2023 season with a renewed focus on national competitions hosted by PlayMarsports [Turf Wars] and regional tournament play including the local Red Rubber Showdown tournaments. This shift in direction will allow them to hone their skills and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. It is an exciting time for the team, as they are eager to make an impact on the national level.

Red Rubber Showdown Oregon

2022 has been a roller coaster season for the Seattle Base Gods. After losing their first league championship since 2017 to mentors the Violent Chubbies they recorded multiple tie games this season. To make matters worse, they were eliminated in the Seattle Red Rubber Showdown – unable to defend their home turf after a long 3 year tournament hiatus.

The Loss in Seattle was a huge motivation for the team. They packed their bags for Portland, Oregon with the intention of winning it all. “We’re focused, we made the adjustments & we’re ready” said Base Gods captain Anthony Brown on the morning of the tournament.

Opening Round – Chaos on the diamond!

It was an unexpected start for Base Gods, as they were completely outplayed by Kick Asset’s in the first round of the tournament. Losing the opening round 8-3. Three new additions (Emily, Erik, & Billy) had yet to find their rhythm early on, facing issues with kicking & defense scheme. The team needed to recalibrate if they were going to make a comeback. “Sometimes, It takes a good loss to snap us into form” said Base Gods captain Alexa Laurencio.

The Base Gods were up against a formidable opponent in round 2 of pool play. The former 2018 champion & leader of La Kickaracha, now representing California with his new squad, the Californians. In a momentous effort, the Base Gods roared back with a vengeance in their 8-3 victory! After a hard-fought and scrappy 6-2 victory against their next opponent 21 Outs, they moved to the semifinals against Porkchop Express, former 2019 Red Rubber Showdown Champions. Sheesh!

Red Rubber Showdown – Championship under the lights

The Gods were nearly denied their championship ticket, but in a thrilling turn of events, they managed to defeat Porkchop Express 5-4 in walk off fashion. The victory set up a highly anticipated rematch under the lights against Kick Asset’s. A marquee event pitting Washington’s best versus Oregon’s elite in the City of Roses!

It was a new dawn for the gods as they took the field with newfound focus and determination. From the very start, it was clear that this was not the same team. The gods quickly secured four runs in the early innings, leaving Kick Asset’s scoreless for nearly 5 innings. Kick Assets would eventually score 1 run on an error late in the 5th inning.

The Red Rubber Showdown was a thrilling affair as Anthony Brown secured the final two outs to close out the game. With runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth inning, Catching a line drive & closing it out with a chest pass to first, igniting an eruption of cheers. The gods had claimed their first Red Rubber Showdown Championship 6-1 in poetic fashion.

Red Rubber Showdown Seattle

After three years of waiting, the 2021 Red Rubber Showdown kickball tournament finally returned to Seattle. This highly-anticipated event saw teams from all over the Pacific Northwest come together for an intense competition. The tournament was full of thrilling plays, exciting matchups, and a few surprise upsets that made for an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Oregon brought the heat with three new powerhouse kickball squads: Hot Sauce Committee, P-Town Pounders, and Smell the Roses. A mix of Oregon’s best kickball talent & built to win. They faced Seattle’s own Base Gods, Hold My Kick and rookies Pitches Be Crazy in a battle for the Pacific Northwest.

The Base Gods and Hot Sauce Committee faced off in an intense match that showcased the talents of both teams. Despite the Base Gods’ considerable experience, they were unable to overcome the strength of their opponents, ultimately falling 1-4. This was their first loss in over two years and a reminder that even the most well-prepared team can be beaten.

Viewers were kept enthralled by the second game between Base Gods and Smell the Roses. It was an intense match that kept people on their toes until the very end. With the score tied at two, was broken open by a single error. Pitcher Anthony Brown made a spectacular defensive play to secure a 4-2 victory for the Base Gods.

The gods certainly had their work cut out for them in the game between the P-Town Pounders . After a mistake in the opening play saw the lead off kicker Trey kick a homerun, they managed to fight back and tie the game. However, their defense eventually unraveled and they were unable to prevent their opponents from winning.

The Gods were on the brink of elimination as they faced play Hot Sauce Committee Again in the semi-finals. The pressure was on as their defensive chemistry had failed them in previous matches and they needed adjustments to stay alive in this tournament. The stakes were high for the semi-finals and each player was determined secure a spot in the finals.

It was a game that had the potential to be a classic. The gods were poised for victory, but uncharacteristic errors and personal disputes cost them the game in the later innings. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to contain their opponents, who scored another three runs in the final inning to win 2-6. It was a heartbreaking loss for the gods and one that will not soon be forgotten.
