2022 has been a roller coaster season for the Seattle Base Gods. After losing their first league championship since 2017 to mentors the Violent Chubbies they recorded multiple tie games this season. To make matters worse, they were eliminated in the Seattle Red Rubber Showdown – unable to defend their home turf after a long 3 year tournament hiatus.
The Loss in Seattle was a huge motivation for the team. They packed their bags for Portland, Oregon with the intention of winning it all. “We’re focused, we made the adjustments & we’re ready” said Base Gods captain Anthony Brown on the morning of the tournament.
Opening Round – Chaos on the diamond!
It was an unexpected start for Base Gods, as they were completely outplayed by Kick Asset’s in the first round of the tournament. Losing the opening round 8-3. Three new additions (Emily, Erik, & Billy) had yet to find their rhythm early on, facing issues with kicking & defense scheme. The team needed to recalibrate if they were going to make a comeback. “Sometimes, It takes a good loss to snap us into form” said Base Gods captain Alexa Laurencio.
The Base Gods were up against a formidable opponent in round 2 of pool play. The former 2018 champion & leader of La Kickaracha, now representing California with his new squad, the Californians. In a momentous effort, the Base Gods roared back with a vengeance in their 8-3 victory! After a hard-fought and scrappy 6-2 victory against their next opponent 21 Outs, they moved to the semifinals against Porkchop Express, former 2019 Red Rubber Showdown Champions. Sheesh!
Red Rubber Showdown – Championship under the lights
The Gods were nearly denied their championship ticket, but in a thrilling turn of events, they managed to defeat Porkchop Express 5-4 in walk off fashion. The victory set up a highly anticipated rematch under the lights against Kick Asset’s. A marquee event pitting Washington’s best versus Oregon’s elite in the City of Roses!
It was a new dawn for the gods as they took the field with newfound focus and determination. From the very start, it was clear that this was not the same team. The gods quickly secured four runs in the early innings, leaving Kick Asset’s scoreless for nearly 5 innings. Kick Assets would eventually score 1 run on an error late in the 5th inning.
The Red Rubber Showdown was a thrilling affair as Anthony Brown secured the final two outs to close out the game. With runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth inning, Catching a line drive & closing it out with a chest pass to first, igniting an eruption of cheers. The gods had claimed their first Red Rubber Showdown Championship 6-1 in poetic fashion.
